Powells is one of the most popular destinations in Portland (both for tourists and residents), and there are plenty of reasons why. With more than a million volumes, its the biggest independent bookstore in the United States. Let us count the ways we love Powells.
1. Its a Portland institution.
Since 1971, Powells has been serving Portlands readers. Its mission states:
"We have a social responsibility to the community and to our industry to fight censorship, promote literary awareness and encourage authors and their works."
2. The selection is unbeatable.
The main store, located at NW 10th/Burnside takes up an entire city block. If you love to browse for books (new and used), you can get lost here for hours. Their magazine selection is amazing, too.
3. Shop at six locations.
In addition to the downtown store, there are five other Powells locations.
They are:
Powell's Technical Books
33 NW Park Avenue
Portland, OR 97209
Powell's Books in Beaverton
8725 SW Cascade Avenue
Beaverton, OR 97008
Powell's Books on Hawthorne
3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Portland, OR 97214
Powell's Books for Cooks and Gardeners
3747 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Portland, OR 97214
Powell's Books at PDX
7000 NE Airport Way
Suite 2250
Portland OR 97218
4. Enjoy engaging events.
Powells attracts amazing authors for speaking engagements. Most events are held at the Burnside store but occasionally authors will speak at Hawthorne. Check the
schedule.
5. They get involved with the local community.
Powells supports public schools and libraries, adult literacy programs, and has their own program called Its For Kids, which donates thousands of books to Portland and Beaverton schools.
