Portland Shopping Streets

Top Streets for Portland Shopping

From , former About.com Guide

Instead of heading to the mall, why not hit up one of Portland's shopping streets? You'll support local businesses, find more interesting merchandise, and get to know a Portland neighborhood a little bit better.

1. NW 23rd Avenue

Where to go:
Shopping all of NW 23rd in one go would be a feat. I recommend starting near Burnside and working your down the street. Also, the Westover shopping center just above 23rd/Burnside is worth a visit.

    What you'll find:
Upscale shopping for the home, body, and beyond.
  • Familiar stores like Urban outfitters, Pottery Barn, and Restoration Hardware
  • Blake - Where denim dreams come true (2285 NW Johnson)
  • Hello Portland - Cards and gifts with an edge (525 NW 23rd)

2. NE Alberta Street

Where to go:
Alberta Street is pretty long, but a lot of the shopping is between NE 15th and NE 25th.

What you'll find:
The artsy nature of this street is reflected in its stores. You'll find Portland-designed clothes, lots of art galleries, used furniture, and other stuff worth browsing. A few faves:

  • Tumbleweed - Dress shop owned by Portland designer, Kara Larson(1804 NE Alberta)
  • PED X - A great selection of fun, wearable shoes
  • HiiH Gallery - Amazing handmade paper lamps

3. N. Mississippi Avenue

Where to go:
North Mississippi isn't huge street, and parking isn't generally an issue. One strategy would be to park near the Fresh Pot (4001 N. Mississippi), grab a cup of Stumptown, and walk down and around from there.

What you'll find:
Great boutiques for clothing, home furnishings, and gourmet treats for both you and your pet. Some standouts:

  • Red Wagon: Super-cool kid's clothes
  • Phlox: Wonderfully girly dresses and apparel
  • The Meadow: A gourmet shop specializing in high-end salts and chocolates

4. SE Hawthorne

Where to go:
There are stores on lower Hawthorne, but the stores are most concentrated between SE 34th and SE 39th.

What you'll find:
Lots of clothing and gift shops. Some of the best:

  • Buffalo Exchange (just off Hawthorne on SE 37th
  • Escentials - delicious bath and beauty items in an endless array of scents
  • Greg's - An ever-changing array of artful, quirky gifts and cards. Something in this store is bound to make you smile.

5. NE Broadway

Where to go:
The best shopping on the street is centered around the intersection of NE 15th and Broadway. Street parking can be a challenge, but there is a lot just south of Broadway on NE 14th.

    What you'll find:
  • If you like to cook, start your shopping at Kitchen Kaboodle. And don't overlook the home furnishings they have upstairs.
  • This area also boasts one of the city's most chic shoe stores: Halo.
  • Emily Jane has one-of-a-kind jewelery.
