Mount Tabor Park

By Nancy Levenson, About.com

To the Park!: Located at SE 60th and Salmon Street, Mount Tabor is one of SE Portland’s beautiful parks, but this is no ordinary green space. Mount tabor is an extinct volcano. Cinders discovered in the park were used to pave the roads that run through it.
Amenities: In addition to trails for hiking, walking, and biking, Mount Tabor has a basketball court, tennis courts, playgrounds, and picnic/BBQ areas that are available for events including weddings.
Dog's Day Out: Mount Tabor also hosts one of Portland’s most popular off-leash areas for dogs. Many residents of the neighborhood have fought to remove the off-leash area, and its location has changed several times over the years. But lucky for dogs and their owners, there’s still a corner of the park for free roaming.

When you use the off-leash area, please be responsible! When pet owners don’t abide by the leash and scoop laws, it gives dog-owners a bad name. Here are a few golden rules to remember:

Always pick up the poop: Plastic bags are a dog-owner’s best friend. Tie a few to the leash and you’ll always have one handy. Fine for breaking the scoop law: $150 per incident.
Carry a leash: When you’re not in the designated off-leash area, keep your dog on a leash. Fine for breaking the leash law: $150 per incident.
Keep your distance: Be aware that not everyone loves your furry friend as much as you do, and that even the friendliest dog can scare people, especially children. Assume that everyone you see does NOT want to come into contact with your dog. If they want to say hello, let them approach you.
