Portland Real Estate Resources

By Nancy Levenson, About.com

If you’re considering home ownership, you probably have a million questions. And maybe some of them even keep you up at night. Relax! Portland has a multitude of resources—many of them free—to help you along.

The following organizations are great places to start the process.

The Portland Housing Center
In addition to classes about home buying and managing finances, the PHC can connect you with the right people: lenders and realtors that know the ins and outs of purchasing a house. The Portland Housing Center is certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as both a HUD Certified Counseling Agency and a HUD Certified Non-Profit Provider of Secondary Financing.

The Portland Development Commission
The PDC grants loans and assistance to Portlanders interested in becoming homeowners as well as those who’d like to improve their current houses. Many of these programs have no income restrictions.

Housing Authority of Portland
For those in Multnomah County with special needs, the HAP is here to help. Their mission is to “provide safe, decent and affordable housing for individuals and families who are challenged by income, disability or special need.”
