Frequently Asked Questions About Flexcar

By Nancy Levenson, About.com

What is Flexcar?

Flexcar is a program that offers an alternative to owning a car. For a fee, the program lets you “borrow” a car when you need one, and not have to worry about maintenance or the other hassles that come along with car ownership.

How does it work?

You reserve a car online, pick it up in a designated spot, and off you go. When you’re done with your errands (or your hot date), then return it to the same spot.

What does the fee include?

Reserved parking, insurance, maintenance, gas, 150 miles/day, and 24/7 emergency assistance.

Where can I pick up a Flexcar?

Portland is one of about 20 cities that offers Flexcar. You can go to the locations section of the Flexcar website and choose your neighborhood. Then, Flexcar will tell you where the closest cars are. If you live within city limits, chances are good that you’ll only have a short walk.

How much does it cost?

For a standard membership it's $35/year, then $7/hour or $55/day. If you drive more than a few times a year, it's worth checking into other packages because you'll pay less per trip.

How does Flexcar compare to owning or renting?

It depends on how frequently you drive. To see if Flexcar is right for you, visit the comparison tool on the Flexcar website.
