When it comes to Mexican food, Portland doesn't have an overwhelming number of great options. But there definitely are a few standouts. Find out which Portland Mexican restaurants are worth a visit.
Where: 5507 NE 30th Ave, Portland
What: A friendly neighborhood restaurant serving a variety of authentic Mexican dishes that you won't find everywhere. Authentica's chef was a semifinalist for the James Beard Award for Best Northwest Chef in 2010. The brunch is excellent (usually without a wait) and the prices are very reasonable for what you get.
Where: 2135 Southeast Division Street
What: Specialties from Oaxaca, the Yucatan and Veracruz regions of Mexico, Nuestra Cocina offers simple, delicious fare served a lively dining room. In the summertime, ask for a table on the patio -- it's worth the wait. The drinks and desserts are quite special, too.
3. TrebolWhere: 4835 North Albina Avenue
What: This is an upscale Mexican place that also offers a huge selection of tequila, so come prepared to sip. Think of Trebol less as a straigh-up Mexican restaurant and more as a place to find modern Northwest cuisine with Mexican flavors.
4. Tortilleria y Tienda de Leon
Where: 16223 NE Glisan, Gresham
What: There's a deli counter in the back of this Mexican grocery store that offers some of the most authentic Mexican food available in the area. Think inexpensive, unfussy, and totally worth the trek.
Where: 10605 SE Main St. in Milwaukie, OR (The food from this restaurant is also sold at farmer's markets around town)
What: I'd never heard of an asparagus tamale until I visited Casa de tamale. They're incredible! This place brings their produce directly from local farms and prepares all their dishes with love. Tamales and baked goods are also available to-go, as is masa, which you can use to make your own tamales at home.
