Portland Libraries

Top Ten Free Services

By Nancy Levenson, About.com

There's so much more to the library than just borrowing books. The services they offer are top-notch, and they don't cost a thing. Using the library is a great way to save money on everything from movie rentals to tutoring. If you don't have a library card, sign up for one at your local branch and start taking advantage of these fabulous services.

1. Free Wi-Fi at Some Locations

In addition to the computers at the library, some locations also have a public wireless network that's accessible, the Map Room at the Central Library, located on the third floor.

2. Homework Help

You can get one-on-one assistance with locating the resources you need for homework assignments. Hours vary by branch. You can also access live online tutoring in English and Spanish.

3. Place Holds Online

The library's online hold system makes it super easy to find exactly what you're looking for and place a hold on it. When your items are ready, you'll get an email, and your books will be waiting for you at the branch of your choice. So convenient!

4. Computer Classes

Whether you're new to computers or want to learn a new skill such as HTML programming, you'll find a free class at the library. Check the schedule and register online.

5. Research Database Access

Many online research sites charge fees, but when you have a library card, you have access to hundreds of these sites for free. You can research practically any topic, from anthropology to zoology, and everything in between. These resources are especially useful for academic papers, but have many uses beyond that.

6. Downloadable Audiobooks and Videos

Using the Library2Go service, you can access audio and video files for download to your computer or MP3 player.

7. Book delivery for Seniors and the Homebound

If you can't get the library, the library can come to you! Books are available by mail or through volunteers who deliver them to homes. The library also brings books to retirement homes for borrowing.

8. Lectures & Events

From storytelling and book groups to citizenship classes, the library has a full schedule of interesting (and free) events.

9. Printed Information Guides

The library has created guides to popular (and varied) topics such as job hunting, geography, and cooking. Ask the reference desk if you'd like to access a particular guide.

10. Meeting Spaces

Meeting rooms are available for educational, cultural, civic or recreational purposes. In order to qualify, the meetings and programs must be free and of potential interest to the general public.
