See movies you might never see in commercial theaters by checking out the flicks at Portland's fabulous film festivals.

1. Porltand International Film Festival

Portland International Film Festival is the biggest film event in Oregon, drawing over 30,000 each February. Audiences can check out the premiers of more than 100 shorts and feature films from around the world.

Where: Check back for 2008 locations.

When: February 7 – 23, 2008

How much: General admission is $8.

2. 10 or Less Fest

The tagline for this festival is “Because 15 minutes of fame is too much.” It’s perfect for anyone with a short attention span or those of us who aren’t sure we’re film fest types. If you see a terrible movie, just wait a few minutes and it will be over.

Where: Hollywood Theater, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd

When: check back for 2008 dates

How much: Admission to any single film is $7. An all-pass is $20.

3. GLB Film Festival

Cinema 21 hosts this 10-day festival. Show your support for Portland’s lesbian and gay community. You can purchase tickets in advance via Ticket Web. Call (866)468.7623 or go to the Ticket Web website. Sign up for the PLGFF mailing list here.

4. NW Film and Video Festival

Shorts, features and documentaries are chosen by well-known filmmakers such as Gus Van Sant and Simpsons creator Matt Groening. The panel will choose about 30-45 films during the festival, after which a handful of them are selected for the Best of the Northwest Tour program which travels the following year throughout the Northwest.

Where: The Guild Theater, 829 SW 9th Avenue

How much: $7 for general admission. $40 for a festival pass.

5. Longbaugh

For one weekend a year, the Willamette Week’s film festival, Longbaugh, takes over the city with showings at practically every independent theater in town. There’s even a mini film festival, Lil Longbaugh, just for kids.

Where: All over the place. Venues include the Bagdad, the Laurelhurst Theater, and Cinema 21.
