Events at Portland Libraries

Free Stuff to Do

By Nancy Levenson, About.com

In addition to being an amazing resource for books, magazines and periodicals, the Portland library system holds events every week, and the events are free. Find out about book clubs, story times for kids, arts & crafts classes, and more.

1. Eco-Roof Tours

Did you know there's a garden on top of the Multnomah County Library's Central branch? Get a free tour of this unique rooftop. Be sure to call ahead to make a reservation.

2. Read to the Dogs

By spending 30 minutes reading to the dogs, you can improve your reading skills and help an animal from the Dove Lewis Animal Assisted Therapy and Education Program.

3. Storytimes

Bring the kids to a storytime in your neighborhood. There's an event for all age groups, and they're not just for English speakers. Storytimes are also conducted in languages such as Chinese, Vietnamese, and Spanish.

4. Knitting Groups

Whether you're new to knitting or you're looking for creative friends, the library has a knitting group for you. Get your needles ready.

5. Sunday Cinema Classics

Catch up on classic movies at the library. There's limited seating, so make a reservation.

6. Computer Classes

Learn how to use a computer, or brush up on your software or programming skills. Online learning programs are also available.

7. Book Groups

Get together with others and talk about the books you're reading. It's a great way to share your insights and meet like-minded people.

8. Poetry Readings

Learn about the art of poetry. Come hear beautiful poetry read aloud.
