See Films for Less

How to save on movie tickets

If you love movies but you find yourself cringing at full-price movie ticket prices, you’ll be glad to know that Portland offers a lot of lower-priced options. Here are my top five ways to see movies on the cheap. Of course, you can always go see a matinee, but these tips focus on seeing evening movies for less.

Cheap Theaters
Go see a first-run movie at an independent theater like the remodeled Roseway Theater, Cinemagic or one of the second-run theaters like Laurelhurst. Tickets at the Laurelhurst Theater, for example, are only $3/each.

Two for One
Get two for one admission at the Academy Theater. They run this special on Tuesdays. Also, you can watch two movies in a row on Mondays at Academy for only $4.

Special Day Discounts
For only $5, you can see a first-run movie on Monday or Tuesday at the Living Room Theaters, located downtown at SW 10th and Stark. This special isn't valid on holidays.

Association Discounts
If you're a member of AAA or the National Association for the Self Employed, you can get discounted tickets. You just purchase them in advance through the association. Also, some credit unions offer discounted tickets.

Multi-passes
Get a pass that entitles you to multiple shows and save. Theaters such as the Academy Theater.

Free Movie Events
There are several weekly free movie nights in town and some seasonal events, too. If you know of a free movie event that's not listed here, please e-mail me at portlandor.guide@about.com.
