In addition to one of the most vibrant food scenes in the country, Portland has become a leader in the microbrew and wine worlds as well.
Small batch distilleries are the next big thing, and once again Portland is leading the way. In Part 1 of the Portland Distillery Roundup, I take a look at the five businesses that have banded together to form "Distillery Row," and in Part 2 I profile six additional distilleries that are putting Portland on the map for hard alcohol as well.
Most of the distilleries offer regular tastings and tours -- and they're reasonable. Third-party outfits also will shuttle you between destinations so that you can hit more than one without worrying about designating a driver. Between the bourbons, vodkas, brandies, ouzo, grappa and aquavit, there's bound to be something for just about every palette.
Local bars and restaurants are prominently featuring the micro-distilleries' liquors in a wide variety of cocktails as well.
