Mixed Recycling: Thumbs Up?

Wednesday May 28, 2008

Starting this month, recycling in the city of Portland is a little bit different. The tag line of the new program is "Sort Less. Recycle More!" Aside from glass, which now goes into your yellow tub, all recyclables can be put into the new blue roll-carts and pulled to the curb. Plus, you can recycle those plastic tubs now (like the ones for yogurt). Lids still go into the trash (or you can bring them to another recycler such as Far West Fibers at 5525 SE 28th Ave.)

If you haven't gotten your blue roll-cart yet, don't worry. Between now and the end of July, you'll get one delivered to your house (you might see a notice in your recycling bin a few weeks prior). Not everyone is a fan of the new roll carts. Some say their too big, or an eyesore. Let us know what you think. Just click on "comments" below and say what's on your mind.

I think mixed recycling makes a lot of sense. I hate sorting so now I can collect everything in one small bin under the kitchen sink and transfer it to the big bin outside when needed. Plus if you have more of one type of recycling its not overflowing out of its little type-specific bin!

I never recycled until I got my new blue container and now almost all of my trash gets recycled. Last week I only had one half filled bag of non-recyclable stuff. The bins are great and make it easy to do something good for the environment. I love it!
