One of the first places I ever ate in Portland remained one of my favorites: Bower's Bakery on SE Hawthorne Boulevard. When I wanted to indulge, I'd head there on a weekend morning for a giant cinnamon roll or one of their fresh bagels. Later, I discovered the beauty of their sandwiches which were huge, served on their own bread, and packed with delicious, high-quality ingredients. Plus, they came with a side salad (they made a great German potato salad!) and a little cookie. All in all, it was enough food for two meals, and the price was right (around $6). Now that Bowers has closed its doors, I'm taking suggestions for what could become my new favorite bakery/sandwich shop.

This is sad indeed. Especially, now that this will apparently be turned into condo parking.
I think the best sandwich place in this are is now the Boar’s Head inside Zupans, and that is unfortunate.
Sarah Bowers is still in business baking the same pastries and sweets for wholesale accounts. We are happy to take any orders form the public with a 24 hour notice. Feel free to call 503-493-8342.
I ate there for a long time-then it turned filthy, unkept and the service, well…it was very sad indeed…last year I would peek in the window every so often to check it out, hoping for them to clean-up the place so I could indulge again…I was so sad, I kept hoping…
:O(
Bowers was THE BEST bakery ever – so sad. Any way we can get the muffin recipe? NO ONE makes muffins like those!
